GPS offers direction in a time of need. It is a carefully constructed, powerful variation of “circle time” that addresses issues of classroom and schoolyard behaviour in a safe and meaningful way while improving the personal and social capabilities of students and the facilitator.
This resource will guide you through the Stages and Steps that are first practised by the class using a fictional scenario. Once practised, the class will become comfortable with the GPS process and able to tackle whatever real issues are raised.
A GPS Conference is about the truth and the truth, when heard, is often difficult to deal with and in being so, requires the skill of tact and the quality of empathy. Tact and empathy can be learnt via the behaviour education inherent in a GPS Conference.
A GPS Conference does not exclude children from the circle. The circle is their community and their membership of that community is unbreakable. The message here is that your community will be here for you when you need them the most. You belong, and if your behaviour makes the relationship with your community difficult they will, to a person, help and support you to make things better.
